Why are you doing this? Isn't it just a way to derive income for doing nothing?

This site is lined to several of my websites and provides a central facility for generating income. But I believe in balance, from many of my sites, I provide free content. I could ask for money, I could whine about the cost of web space and equipment. I provide free services and and information, in return all I ask is that if you are web shopping, for items I promote, it costs you nothing to use my links to locate and buy your products. As you pass through you may even read about your upcoming purchase and in so doing, become a smarter more informed buyer. The company throws back a few beans my way for the referral. I also am happy to assist family and friends with their tech purchases. As you can imagine, once you get a reputation, this can really eat up your spare time. As much as I enjoy helping people, I hate asking for money, and I hate losing all that spare time. Now we talk a bit and then I refer them to this site. I call it Win, win, win!

I see you are favoring the Olympus eVolt-500 DSLR, while most of my friends favor the Canon Rebel XT as an entry level DSLR. Why is this?

This is a great question, if you have invested in Canon lenses already, if you are planning on moving up to Canon cameras and accessories. Buying the Rebel makes perfect sense. In several magazine and on line tests, the Canon outperformed the eVolt-500, but only by a very subjective hair! I own the eVolt-500 and must tell you "OMG!" this camera rocks! I bought the two lens kit and these lenses are fast, smooth and feel like a million dollars. The photos are SHARP, the camera feels good to hold. battery life is awesome and if you have never white balanced before, you will do it now! White balance corrects for the color cast that is often inherent in artificially lighted scenes. Most cameras including the eVolt and Rebel, can do this automatically. When you manually white balance it is noticeably more accurate. The eVolt makes this 'one touch' easy! The eVolt with two lenses can be found for about $150 less than a one lens Rebel kit! Real value!

What do I need to do about web hosting?

It really depends on what you need. Don't you hate that response? I know I do, but it is true. So, how do you know what you need, if you do not know what the differences mean to you? Ask yourself "How will I use this website"? Will you be writing VB, C# or ASP code? Will you be using MS Frontpage? does your software use MS SQL server? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should consider a host that uses Microsoft IIS servers. Will you be posting large media files or podcasting? Then I suggest Libsyn. Everyone else should use BlueHost or a similar Linux based hosting service. I like BlueHost because it includes Free software! Free MySQL servers, Free Email and more! Other free amenities include Blogging software like WordPress, Site creation software, CMS systems like Mambo and Joomla, Forums like PHPbb, Wiki's etc! You can get a package like this for about $100/yr! These are all shred hosting solutions, you share a server and bandwidth with many others. For most of us this works out fine and saves us a lot of money. Dedicated servers or Collocation would be a next tier solution. you will know when you need this and you won't care what it costs!
